Topic:  Retention and Disposition - It's About the Policy

No records and information management objective has ever received more attention than "how long do we need to keep these records and when can we destroy them?" - The Records Retention and Disposition Process, or Program. To this day, even with all of our advanced technology, this initiative, this process continues to present one of the more formidable obstacles to all organizations. From the inventory process, through categorization, development and implementation to long-term compliance maintenance and management, this initiative is difficult to grasp and even more difficult to sustain over a long period of time.

The key to successful development, implementation and management is the policy. Without a well-developed, executively empowered and approved policy, the processes for retention and disposition will eventually fail. It is critical to ensure both are developed and properly empowered. Not taking the time to ensure that the retention and disposition process is wrapped firmly by executive mandated policy, is a formula for failure.

Speaker:  Bill Millican, Records & Information Management (RIM) Consultant

Bill Millican brings over 30 years of Records and Information Management (RIM) industry experience to help clients develop, implement and manage their RIM processes in a practical, legally compliant and cost-effective way. As the Director of Information Technology and Operations with arma International, Bill acted as an official delegate to several organizations overseeing the development of standards, guidelines and best practices for the RIM profession. These organizations include ansi, niso, nara, aiim, saa, The Sedona Conference, nfpa, idsp, ansi's Homeland Security Council and others. In addition, Bill provided written articles and presentations for a number of publications and organizations throughout the world. Prior to arma, Bill served as a Senior RIM Consultant. At eSentio Technologies Bill developed retention and disposition processes, procedures and policies. He conducted risk assessments associated with noncompliance and developed mitigation strategies. Through his own consulting practice, he also performed a software assessment for Elite Information Systems (nka Thomson Reuters). This project involved assessing how the organization's records management clients were using software to manage information and records. He also worked as a RIM Consultant for Syndet Business Technologies in which he provided records management application training.
